Open every new topic by presenting the big picture of the entire unit, verbally through lecture and discussion and visually with video and graphic organizers (like hierarchical trees).

Give students a list or outline of everything you plan to cover in a lesson, topic or unit. Provide either one giant list that covers everything (it would also help learners organize their notes) or smaller, detailed ones each day.

Hang posters and peripherals relevant to the whole unit so that learners always have a global map of the material close at hand.

Incorporate music, drama and physical movement as much as possible.

Always alert students when you are about to present information that is critical or very important. (You’ll still have plenty of room in your presentation for spontaneity.)

Before, during and at the conclusion of any lesson, encourage learners to map out and describe on paper their understanding of the topic. At the end of the week, give students several options of graphic organizers to use and tell them refer to class notes and textbooks as they map out a week’s worth of content. Collect the student work—it gives you immediate information about what they learned and forgot—and use it to identify what holes you need to fill in on Monday.
